DESCRIPTION;LANGUAGE=en-GB:We would like to invite you to the next talk of
the spring in the Aalto AGC (Algebra\, Geometry and Combinatorics) Seminar
 !\n\nThe talk is on\nMon 18.5. at 14:15-15:00\nin\nM3\, Otakaari 1\n\nThe
speaker is Michael Yang\n\nTitle: Completions to discrete probability dist
ributions in scaled log-linear models (master’s thesis presentation)\nAb
stract: Log-linear models are mathematical models that are mapped to linea
r models under the logarithm map. In the context of algebraic geometry\, t
hey can be expressed as the intersection of a toric variety with the proba
bility simplex. In this talk\, we will look at how to complete a partial
observation to the log-linear model. That is\, for a point that is missing
certain coordinates\, filling in those missing coordinates in such a way
that the complete point belongs in the log-linear model. As it turns out\,
under certain conditions\, there will always be at most two unique comple
tions to the log-linear model for a partial observation. During this talk\
, we will elaborate on this topic by considering concepts from algebraic g
eometry\, and apply these concepts on a simple but non-trivial example of
the Hardy-Weinberg principle applied to a gene pool with two alleles.\n\n
