Dear all,

the math department at Uni Bremen invites application for a tenure track
assistant professorship on mathematical foundations of data analysis.
This includes, but is not restricted to topological methods (e.g.
persistent homology). Deadline is 31.12.2019.

Below is a translation of the original advertisement in German, which
can be found here:

The University of Bremen is characterised by a high degree of
innovation. Especially for young scientists and researchers it provides
a versatile research and teaching environment with predictable and
transparent career paths.

The department of Mathematics and Computer Science, of the University of
Bremen, has an opening for

Tenure track professorship (f/m/d) (W1 with tenure track towards W2) The
position is part of Pure Mathematics and has denomination

Mathematical foundations of data analysis

The position reference number is JP 401/19

The successful candidate will initially be appointed for three years.
After an interim evaluation the appointment will be extended for a
further three years. Assuming a positive final evaluation after six
years at the latest, the candidate will be offered tenure (W2). In order
to be able to distinguish themselves scientifically, tenure-track
professors are guaranteed a gradual entry into teaching activities.

We are looking for a young scientist who already has some experience in
research and in teaching, and who is expected to develop into a national
and, furthermore, into an international leader in his field.

The successful candidate will have his/her research focus in algebra,
topology or discrete mathematics. It is furthermore desirable that the
candidate will apply pure mathematics methods in data analysis or will
demonstrate a convincing potential for such applications.

Moreover, it is expected that the applicant will be able to clearly
demonstrate links to existing working groups in the department, in
particular to the ALTA Institute. There is a broader cooperative
scientific environment, which offers possibilities for connection to the
Center for Technomathematics (ZeTeM, data analysis) or to the scientific
focus group Minds - Media - Machines (KI, Data Science).

The obligations include teaching the Bachelor's and Master's courses in
Mathematics and Technomathematics to diverse student groups. The
successful candidate will offer basic teaching in Linear Algebra and
Algebra in the Bachelor's programme in Mathematics and will contribute
to strengthening the specialisation in Algebra in the Master's programme
in Mathematics.

Knowledge of the German language is not mandatory. However, it is
expected that the successful candidate will be willing and able to teach
in German after three years. The teaching obligations are significantly
reduced in the first few years.

The application requirements are a university degree, an outstanding
doctorate in a relevant field and pedagogical aptitude. Initial
experience in independent research and teaching, which can also be
gained outside the university sector, is desirable.

The appointment will be done in accord with §§ 18 and 18a BremHG and §
117 BremBG. Applicants already holding a doctorate in Bremen should have
changed university after completing their doctorate or have worked
outside Bremen University for at least two years. Irrespective of the
distance in time to the doctorate (a maximum of five years), previous
employment phases at german universities and research institutions
should not in total exceed six years (see § 117 BremBG).

The university offers a wide range of services that support new
recruits, such as a Welcome Center, childcare and dual career
opportunities, as well as personnel development and continuing education.

The University of Bremen aims to increase the proportion of women in
science. It has received several awards in programmes to promote gender
equality and is certified as a family-friendly university. Women
scientists are strongly encouraged to apply. International applications
and applications from academics with a migration background are
expressly welcome. Priority will be given to applicants with severe
disabilities who otherwise have comparable professional and personal
qualifications.

Applications with the usual documents and documents/certificates must be
sent by post by 31 December 2019, quoting the reference number, to

Universität Bremen
Fachbereich 03 Mathematik und Informatik Fachbereichsverwaltung
Bibliothekstraße 5
28359 Bremen

or electronically as a single PDF file to: JP401-19 at fb3.uni-bremen.de
