The Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences (MPI MiS)
invites applications for

Postdoctoral Researchers and PhD students in the area of Mathematical
Software.

The MPI MiS is a research institute located in Leipzig, Germany, and
cooperates with Leipzig University. Research at the MPI MiS exploits the
fruitful interaction between mathematics and the sciences. We not only
apply existing mathematical methods and techniques to the sciences but
we also transmit the conceptual and structural approach of mathematics
into new areas of research, and, vice versa, translate scientific
questions and problems into mathematical challenges.

This mission depends on an interdisciplinary approach to mathematical
and scientific questions and we tackle these questions by means of
scientific exchange, collaboration, and cooperation with researchers
from all over the world. We hire both in the classical areas of
mathematics and in fields exploring new interactions.

Currently, we are establishing a new research group in the area of
Mathematical Software headed by the newly appointed Max Planck Fellow
Michael Joswig. This group will initially consist of the Max Planck
Fellow, one postdoc and (at least) one PhD student and will be closely
collaborating with the established groups in nonlinear algebra,
algebraic geometry, tensors and optimization, and information geometry.
Applications are invited from candidates across the mathematical
sciences with a strong commitment to the development and use of
Mathematical Software for research questions.

We offer:
PhD funding for 3 years; postdoctoral position for 1-3 years.
No teaching duties, but (for postdocs) the possibility to teach an
advanced course in our international graduate school.
We provide a scientific environment where you are encouraged to explore
new scientific directions and where you will find many partners with
whom you can discuss a wide range of scientific ideas.
Deadline November 01, 2019 (starting date flexible).
Application:
Please submit your documents using our online application form and
choose "Application MPI MiS" as option.
During the application process, you will be asked for which kind of
position you apply. Please choose "Math Software". Also, asked for your
mentor, please choose Michael Joswig.
The Max-Planck society strives for gender diversity. We welcome
applications from all backgrounds.
The Max-Planck society is committed to increasing the number of
individuals with disabilities in its workforce and therefore encourages
applications from such qualified individuals.
If you have any questions please visit the institute's webpage, the
webpage of Michael Joswig, or contact us at application(at)mis.mpg.de.
