Postdoctoral Position in Quantum Computer Science at Los Alamos National
Laboratory
What You Will Do
Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking postdoctoral
researchers to work both independently and in a team environment on
theoretical and applied computer science approaches to quantum
computing, quantum algorithms, quantum simulation, quantum annealing,
quantum optimization, and quantum machine learning. One particular goal
is to conduct the foundational research needed to convert noisy,
intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) computers into a reliable resource
that benefits LANL's scientific and national-security missions.
The successful candidate will be expected to
1. Conduct research to develop methods for exploiting near-term
quantum computing technologies
2. Develop theoretical and computational algorithms, methods, and
tools for quantum computers
3. Communicate research results through reports, presentations, and
peer-reviewed publications
Previous experience with quantum computing, such as quantum algorithms,
quantum compilers, quantum machine learning, quantum annealers, or
quantum simulators, is a plus but not a requirement. Mathematical
aptitude and enthusiasm to learn about quantum computing are equally
crucial.
LANL has a history of ground-breaking achievements in quantum computing.
You will have the opportunity to work with internationally recognized
experts in the field.
Where You Will Work
Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is
a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on
behalf of national security. LANL enhances national security by
ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile,
developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass
destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment,
infrastructure, health, and global security concerns.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
1. PhD or equivalent in Computer Science, Computer Engineering,
Mathematics, or a related field
2. Substantial research experience in a mathematically-oriented
field, such as quantum computing or theoretical computer science, and
demonstrated ability to quickly understand mathematical concepts in
other fields
3. Demonstrated research ability, as evidenced by publications,
reports, presentations, awards, etc.
4. Excellent communication skills, as evidenced by publications
and a cogent cover letter
Desired Skills:
Research experience in one or more of the fields of quantum information,
quantum algorithms, quantum foundations, and the simulation of quantum
systems
Notes to Applicants:
If interested, please send email to Stephan Eidenbenz,
eidenben at lanl.gov, include a curriculum vitae with a publication list
-preferably with citation counts—and a cover letter (guideline: 1–2
pages) that describes your research interests and qualifications.
Starting dates are flexible. See
https://www.lanl.gov/careers/career-options/postdoctoral-research/index.php
for details about the postdoc program, including salary information.
Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates
will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
