The Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics in cooperation
with the Department of Computing Science at Umea University (Sweden) is
seeking a postdoctoral fellow in the area of winning strategies for
popular board games for 2 years. The expected starting date is July 1,
2021, or by agreement.
The project belongs to the broad field of game theory and focuses on the
study of strategies for board games such as Mastermind, Sudoku, and
Connect Four. We are interested in finding and analyzing strategies, in
particular optimal winning strategies. This includes developing and
implementing algorithms both for the strategies and their analysis, as
well as studying the connection between these strategies and artificial
intelligence techniques.
The candidate should have a PhD in mathematics, computer science or a
closely related field. Very good command of the English language, good
writing skills and ability to work in an interdisciplinary environment
are required.
The candidate should have a good knowledge in discrete optimization and
game theory as well as good programming skills. Additional scientific
expertise in theoretical computer science is considered to be an
advantage. Consideration will also be given to how well the fellow’s
experience and skills can complement and strengthen ongoing research at
the departments.
