JOB DESCRIPTION

The applicant will be appointed as a tenure track assistant professor 
and contribute to research and teaching within the areas of operations 
research and operations management. Teaching concerns courses in the 
Econometrics and Operations Research programs, as well as in business 
and economics programs at SBE, at the undergraduate and graduate levels. 
Research falls within the Graduate School of Business and Economics. The 
QE department has a strong research record in mathematics of operations 
research, econometrics and economic theory. It is largely responsible 
for the bachelor and master programs in Econometrics and Operations 
Research, including Data Science, Mathematical Economics and Actuarial 
Science, with yearly enrolment of around 90 bachelor and 35 master students.


REQUIREMENTS

Profile of the candidate:

* Has a PhD (or close to completion) in Operations Research, 
Mathematics, Computer Science, or another relevant area;
* Has a strong research orientation;

We welcome applications from highly qualified candidates with strong
publication records and excellent teaching skills. The successful applicant
should preferably develop methodological tools in the areas of Algorithms,

intersection of algebraic complexity theory, geometric complexity

You will have a strong background in mathematics and theoretical

JUNIA is a French graduate school of science and engineering focused on
ecological, digital and technological transitions, where students (about
5,000) and faculty confront the grand challenges of today and tomorrow.
JUNIA has over 120 faculty researchers, engineers, and technicians?as well
as nearly 100 PhD students and post-doctorate researchers?on 17 research
teams across our campuses. Several of the research teams contribute to
mixed research unit with the French National Center for Scientific Research
(CNRS) like IEMN (UMR8520).

As part of the Catholic University of Lille, JUNIA is also at the right
place to collaborate with laboratories of the University, especially the
ETHICS laboratory. ETHICS (EA 7446) is an accredited and multidisciplinary
research unit whose scientific object is defined by the ELSI (Ethical,
Legal and Social Implications) as well as philosophical questions and
aspects raised by the anthropological, technological, and socio-economic
mutations of the contemporary world.

*Subject Area*

The broad area of research is Discrete Optimization with quantum computers.

*Project description*

In this postdoc, the candidate will have to solve problems adapted to
quantum machines. The successful candidate will work under the supervision
of Samuel Deleplanque from the IEMN laboratory, Lille, France.

Today, many quantum machines are accessible for mathematicians and
informaticians since many machines or algorithms are taking Quadratic
Unconstrained Binary Optimization models (QUBO) as input. This is the case
for analog adiabatic D-Wave machines (e.g., Advantage, D-Wave 2000Q),
analog Pasqal machines and algorithms such as Quantum Approximate
Optimization Algorithm (QAOA) for gated based universal quantum computers
(e.g., IBM Osprey QPU). The focus will be on D-Wave machines.

The candidate will first consider general Combinatorial Optimization
problems (e.g., Max-Cut, Min-k-Cut, Max Clique, Minimum Vertex Coloring,
Maximum Independent Set and other types of problems, such as the NP-Hard
3Sat). For solving these problems on quantum machines, set of instances,
theoretical results such as problems reductions (e.g., 3SAT ?p MIS) and
limits of machines (from the topology: the qubits graph and especially its
degree, e.g., Zephyr, Chimera, and Pegasus on D-Wave machines) have to be
taken into- account to propose the best way to solve the problem. The
selection of the problems to be solved will be made according to their
level of adaptation to quantum machines.

Second, the candidate will have to focus on a more applicable problem
related to logistics (vehicle scheduling (e.g., TSP, CVRP, etc.)) or
related to production and project scheduling (Lot-Sizing, RCPSP, Job-Shop
Scheduling, etc.). Her/his preference will be considered.

Third, a hybrid solution will have to be studied on the problem considered
earlier in a way to propose a quantum resolution where there is a
computational performance problem with classical computers. A heuristic
scheme based on a classical computer which will alternate native resolution
and quantum computer calls for solving a subproblem. Moreover, some aspects
of the postdoc can be proposed by the candidate. For example, optimization
problems linked to artificial intelligence, biology, or chemical research.

Finally, if time permits, the postdoc will study Hamiltonians simulation
(Hadfield (2018)[1]) to be used through discretized adiabatic algorithms
implemented for a gated based universal quantum computer. The goal is to
compare performance with analog machines and to study the potential large
scope of such methods.

*Original additional mission*

The candidate will collaborate with the "Ethics, Technology & Humanities"
(ETH+) team of the ETHICS laboratory, in the reflection on societal and
ethical issues raised by recent developments in quantum computing in
general. In this respect, the candidate is not expected to have a specific
competence in humanities and social sciences, but to be open and willing to
reflect with colleagues from other disciplines on the societal, ethical,
and philosophical issues raised by the rise of artificial intelligence and
quantum computing as emerging technologies. To this end, the candidate will
contribute with researchers from his or her JUNIA laboratory and
researchers from ETH+ (ETHICS), to the organization of a multidisciplinary
symposium on the scientific, societal, and ethical issues of quantum
computing. He or she will also participate with the ETH+ team in the
preparation and holding of two workshops bringing together scientists and
citizens on the theme of artificial intelligence, including quantum
computing. This project is part of a participatory science approach
supported by international research (nhnai.org) in progress.

*Requirements and eligibility criteria*

- The expected candidate must have strong Mathematical Programming skills
(MILP, especially with binary models) with a preference for quadratic
modeling (see Glover (2019)[2], Lucas (2014)[3]) and with experience in
constraint relaxation.

- Quantum algorithm knowledge is not requisite but valuable.

- Since the input of these machines generally propose an API implementable
with Python code, some abilities in this language are also expected. Some
C++ and/or RUST programming skills are a plus for a potential hybrid
quantum-classical computer solution.

- Curiosity in quantum technologies and generally in IT is very welcome.

- No specific competence in humanities and social sciences is expected, but
intellectual openness to interdisciplinary dialogue, curiosity, and
willingness to reflect on the societal aspects of quantum computing is
required.

The Institute of Algorithms and Complexity at TUHH: Hamburg University 
of Technology (http://www.algo.tuhh.de/ in Hamburg, Germany offers an 
exciting opportunity to work as a postdoctoral researcher at the 
forefront of algorithms/optimization.

The position is on algorithms for discrete/combinatorial optimization 
problems and operations research with applications in data science. The 
position offers the exciting opportunity to become part of DASHH - Data 
Science in Hamburg, which belongs to and is funded by the Helmholtz 
Foundation, and to work on real-life data sets obtained from world-class 
experiments at DESY and beyond.

The position is offered for a period of 3 years. The salary of the 
position is determined according to level TV-L E-14 of the German public 
sector. The exact amount of salary depends on experience, family 
circumstances, tax classification and other factors. Travel funding is 
available, for attending conferences and workshops, and visiting other 
researchers.

The successful candidate will join the TUHH Institute for Algorithms and

research covers a broad spectrum of algorithmic research; this includes 
big data algorithms, foundations of data science, combinatorial 
optimization, approximation and parameterized algorithms, and 
applications in operations research and discrete mathematics. The 
Institute for Algorithms and Complexity at TU Hamburg currently hosts 
several international researchers, so English is used on a daily basis 
as a working language.

The Parallel computing and Optimisation Group (PCOG) at the University 
of Luxembourg is looking for a Research Associate in hybrid optimization 
algorithms for modern supercomputers.

This is a fully funded position for 2 years in the UltraBO (Ultra-scale 
Computing for solving Big Optimization Problems) project conducted in 
collaboration with the BONUS (Big Optimization and Ultra-Scale 
computing) team of Prof. Melab at the University of Lille (France).

The UltraBO project aims to design and implement novel parallel hybrid 
optimization algorithms for modern supercomputers. Many experiments 
reported in the literature demonstrate that high-quality results are 
obtained through hybridization. However, finding efficient and effective 
hybridization schemes is challenging and tedious. On the other hand, 
according to Top500 modern supercomputers are increasingly large 
(millions of cores), heterogeneous (various CPUs, GPU, FPGA, ?) and less 
and less reliable (Mean Time Between Failures - MTBF<1h) making their 
programming increasingly complex. The design and implementation of 
parallel algorithms for these ultra-scale supercomputers is still in its 
infancy especially in combinatorial optimization.

The Research Associate will thus conduct research in the fields of 
hybrid optimisation algorithms and parallel computing.


Your Profile?

? A PhD degree in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics or a related field.
? Experience in optimisation algorithms (exact, heuristics, 
metaheuristics,?),
? Experience in machine learning algorithms,
? Experience in high-performance computing (HPC) is a plus;

The Numerical Analysis and Applied Mathematics (NUMA) section within the

approximation theory, numerical integration, numerical (multi-)linear 
algebra, numerical partial differential equations, uncertainty

The STADIUS Center for Dynamical Systems, Signal Processing and Data

and multi-linear algebra, statistics and optimization are used for

The TEMPOGRAL ANR Project (LaBRI, LITIS, IRIF) is offering a postdoc
position for one or two years on the topic of *temporal graph
algorithms* in the CS department of the University of Bordeaux (LaBRI).

Temporal graphs arise when the edges of a graph appear at certain points
in time. Classical graph problems can then be revisited to take into
account temporal aspects. The project aims at understanding the nature
of temporal graph problems and how to overcome their specific

The position is full-time and fixed-term for 12 months (possibly
renewable for another 12 months), to start in September 2023 or later.
It is required to have defended a PhD thesis in computer science or
mathematics before starting. The net salary after taxes is between 2100?

taxes includes all the social benefits of a usual French contract
(health benefits, free school for the kids, ...).

The candidate is expected to have a solid background and a strong
interest in any of the following topics: graph algorithms, structural
aspects of graphs, modeling of dynamic networks, distributed algorithms,
and computational complexity. Experience with temporal graphs is not

Candidates should hold a PhD thesis (or expect to defend it soon) and have
a strong background in at least one of the following fields: formal
methods, game theory, theoretical computer science, AI/machine learning,

industry is also welcome (but not mandatory).

UMONS is an excellent research university situated in the city of Mons, a
lively (and historic) student town in the south of Brussels. Living in
Brussels and working in UMONS is also possible (45 minutes train ride). The
research group in UMONS maintains a large number of national and
international collaborations.

Monthly salary will be around 3,000 ? after taxes, depending on the
candidate experience and seniority. Candidates will also be covered by the
Belgian health insurance system. Starting dates and postdoc durations are
flexible. Ideally, postdocs should start between September 2023 and
December 2024.

Research programme :

Directed graphs (digraphs for short) are naturally used to model many 
real-world problems. For example, many graphs modelling networks are by 
essence directed. This is the case for the web graph (its vertices are 
the web pages and there is an arc from a page to another if the first 
one points towards the second), the Twitter graph or Facebook. To 
address those problems, we need to have a better understanding of 
structural and algorithmic aspects of digraphs.

The post-doc will follow the line of the ANR Digraph project whose 
objective is to make some advances on digraph theory in order to get a 
better understanding of important aspects of digraphs and to have more 
insight on the differences and the similarities between graphs and 
digraphs. In particular, we expect the candidate to consider various 
graph colouring theorems and investigate whether corresponding 
statements for symmetric digraphs and dicolouring generalize to digraphs 
and if they can be improved for special classes of digraphs like 
oriented graphs. Moreover, for each polynomial-time algorithm solving a 
graph colouring problem, it should be studied whether there exists a 
polynomial-time algorithm for solving the corresponding dicolouring 
problem for digraphs and some special classes of digraphs.

Matching (MPM) Algorithms Group *at the *Department of Computer Science of
Bar-Ilan university, Israel.*

The main fields of the group research are *algorithms analysis, data
structures, distributed computation algorithms, graph algorithms, big data

The group is led by Professor* Ely Porat,* includes several postdoctoral

The postdoctoral research scholar is expected to devise randomized

The Chair of Algorithms and Complexity Theory at 
Otto-Friedrich-Universit?t of Bamberg, Germany,
aims to fill, starting on the next possible date, one position as

PhD Student/PostDoc - Scientific Employee/Akademischer Rat auf Zeit (m/f/d)
(Full-/or part time in ?Entgeltgruppe? TV-L E 13)

The position is available for a term of 3 years initially with the 
possibility of an extension.

Your role:
? The goal is to combine methods from graph theory, logic, and 
combinatorics to the development of
highly efficient algorithms that come with guarantees, and to 
investigate mathematical conjectures
in the area.
? The position includes teaching assistance of 5 SWS (5 x 45 min per 
week) at the chair. This can be done in
German or English. An intention to learn German is appreciated.

Applicants for a postdoc position: a habilitation is possible and 
supported, the position is a 3-year
position initially, with the possibility of an extension for another 3 
years after a positive evaluation.

Applicants for a PhD: the position is a 3-year position initially, with 
the possibility of an extension
to finish the PhD.

Your Profile:
Successful candidates will have an excellent academic track record and a 
clear motivation to obtain a
PhD/conduct postdoctoral research. In particular, candidates should be 
fluent in mathematical proof
techniques and have a background in at least one of the following areas 
of computer science/mathematics:
? graph theory and algorithms, in particular fixed-parameter algorithms,
? property testing and sublinear algorithms,
? logic, preferably algorithmic model theory or database theory
