The Department of Pharmacology in conjunction with the Alberta Machine
Intelligence Institute (Amii) at the University of Alberta invites
applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor with a research focus on
pharmacogenomics and machine learning.

The successful applicant will be expected to establish and maintain an
independent research program in discovery and/or applied pharmacogenomics
research. Neurological conditions are a priority but other disease areas
may be acceptable. The individual will also contribute to the Department?s
teaching and

research supervision of undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate

An 80% Senior Researcher and Lecturer position will be open at the 
Department of Informatics at the University of Fribourg (Switzerland) 
within the Decision Support & Operations Research group. The position is 
available from February 2024 on.



The main tasks of the selected candidate will consist in doing research 
in the area of structural and algorithmic graph theory, publishing in 
recognized conferences/journals, supervising Master theses, 
collaborating with PhD students, attracting third party funding, and 
starting new international collaborations. Furthermore, he/she is 
supposed to teach 2 courses per year, one of which is the Graph Theory 
and Applications master course. The topic of the second course has to be 
defined together with the candidate but must be related to the domain of 
Operations Research.



The position is fully funded for a maximum of 5 years (no possible 
extension). Starting date is February 1st 2024, if possible. The

* Algorithmic Game Theory (eg. Network congestion games, Network

* Formal Verification (eg. Tarski fixed points, Contraction map fixed
points, Unique sink orientations, Simple-stochastic games)
* Optimization and Machine Learning (eg. finding KKT points of
polynomials, gradient descent in a neural network)

An ideal candidate will have a strong research background in at least one
of the three areas listed above. That candidate will also have, or be close
to completing, a PhD in Computer Science or a related area.

one Position (PostDoc or Phd) for 3 years

at the FernUniversit?t in Hagen, Germany, at the Chair Theoretical 
Computer Science
under supervision of Prof. Andr? Schulz. The research focus of the group 
lies
in graph drawing, computational geometry, algorithms, graph theory and 
related areas.

The position is a full-time position with competitive salary (TV-L 13) 
depending on
the applicant's qualification. The 3-year contract comes with the 
possibility of an
extension for another 3 years. The position includes teaching duties 
such as designing
course material, grading assignments, supervising students (normal 4 SWS 
workload for
German universities). Therefore, it is desired that the candidate is in 
written and
verbal command of the German language. The starting date is negotiable 
but we are interested
in filling the position as soon as possible.

For a postdoc we expect that the candidate has (or is very close to) a 
PhD in Computer
Science or Mathematics and has a solid background in discrete math and 
algorithms.

Ideally, the applicant has knowledge and interest in at least one of the 
following fields:

- graph drawing
- computational geometry
- algorithms
- graph theory
- combinatorics

Looking for a postdoctoral position in mathematical biology, nonlinear 
dynamics, or stochastic processes in 2024? Professor Marc Roussel is 
seeking qualified candidates to co-apply for a University of Lethbridge 
Postdoctoral Fellowship. These competitive fellowships are tenable for 
two years at a salary of $45,000 per year plus benefits. Applicants must 
be available to start between April and September 2024 and must be 
within 5 years of completion of their PhD at the time of taking up the 
appointment. (Allowances are made for candidates who had career 
interruptions following completion of their PhD in accordance with

The Brown and Kuske labs at Georgia Tech invite applications for a 
Postdoctoral Fellow on data-driven math modelling of microbiome 
dynamics. This NSF-funded project seeks to identify general rules 
governing the ecological and evolutionary stability of microbial 
communities in the face of biotic (principally phage) perturbation, 
through a close integration of theory, synthetic microbiome experiments 
and data analysis. The project will involve collaboration with our 
experimental partners in Prof Edze Westra's lab in the UK

The Brown and Kuske labs are part of a thriving community of GT labs at 
the intersection of math and biology. Both labs are part of the Center 
for Microbial Dynamics and Infection (CMDI), which brings a wealth of 
resources to support trainee development and community building. Check

Competitive candidates will have experience in cross-disciplinary 
research spanning math modelling and simulation, preferably with 
connections to the life sciences. Desirable experience includes 
nonlinear dynamics in applied contexts; data-led model identification; 
integrating theory, data, and simulation. Candidates will have a PhD (or 
close to completion) in fields such as Theoretical/Computational Life 
Sciences (eco-evolutionary dynamics a plus), Computational/Applied 
Mathematics or in a related field such as Biomedical Engineering, 
Biophysics or Computational Sciences.

The successful candidate will lead on the development of novel data-led 
eco-evolutionary theory, in close collaboration with experimentalists ? 
including providing input on experimental design. Other core tasks 
include dissemination of results via publications and conferences. The

Currently, DIMAG consists of researchers from various countries such as

Successful candidates for research fellowship positions will be new or

The Algorithms group at IT University of Copenhagen announces an open call
for a Postdoc position in Algebraic Complexity Theory starting 1 January
2024, or soon thereafter. The position is funded by Independent Research
Fund Denmark (Danmarks Frie Forskningsfond DFF) grant led by Nutan Limaye.
The postdoc position is a full-time research position for a duration of 18
months.

The main goal of this project is to make advances in understanding the
power of algebraic formulas. This broad theme can be explored from several
different perspectives. Our goal is to develop new combinations of known
techniques and to innovate new methods to prove results aligned with this
research theme. The postdoc candidate is expected to closely collaborate
with the members of the project and present the work resulting from this
project at workshops and conferences. Teaching of advanced courses is
encouraged but not required. Travel funding is included with the position.

proven research experience in Computer Science or Mathematics and with a
good publication record, for example, publications in top conferences such

I am excited to announce an opening for a postdoctoral researcher on an 
NIH-funded project on the computational and mathematical neuroscience of 
exploration and decision-making, led by Drs. Tim Verstynen (Dept. of 
Psychology, Carnegie Mellon University) and Jonathan Rubin (Dept. of 
Mathematics, University of Pittsburgh). The project specifically focuses 
on how dynamics of cortico-basal ganglia-thalamic pathways map to 
cognitive models of adaptive decision-making, and how these circuits 
regulate information flow in the mammalian brain.? The project includes 
opportunities to work with human behavioral and functional brain imaging 
data as well as rodent electrophysiological and behavioral data.

Scientific context: Multiple problems studied by the ?long-term 
planning? team in the OSIRIS department
of EDF R&D correspond to making investment decisions over a multi-year 
planning horizon while taking
into account economic, physical or legal restrictions and grid balancing.
By their nature, these problems can be modeled as multi-stage stochastic 
optimization problems in the
sense that it is possible to adapt the investment decisions to the 
realization of uncertainty over the course
of the planning horizon. The requirement to balance the electricity grid 
results in Unit Commitment (UC)
problems appearing as subproblems. The presence of numerous discrete 
decisions is a notable characteristic
of these problems.

The complexity and the scale of these problems lead EDF to resort to 
simplifying assumptions in their
solution (for instance, multi-stage problems are approximated by 
two-stage ones or mixed-integer linear
problems are approximated by linear problems). Currently, a tool named 
TiLT (?Long-Term Investment
Trajectories?) is used to optimize investment decisions with a 
multi-year vision where ?trajectories? are
used to formulate very large-scale linear models (with millions of 
variables and constraints). A heuristic
?Investment Loop? is used to fix the investment decisions based on a 
?Unit Commitment? (UC) solver
called Continental. The team has started working on the solution of the 
two-stage (meaning that all investment
decisions are taken before the realization of uncertainty) approximation 
of these problems exploiting
the fact that when investment decisions are fixed the constraints 
ensuring the electricity grid balance can
be decomposed into independent subproblems by trajectory. Geographical 
and temporal decoupling is
also used to reduce the size of sub-problems. Decomposition methods - 
notably Benders or Lagrangian
decomposition - can be used to exploit this type of structure. In a 
Benders decomposition approach, the
master problem consists of fixing the investment decisions (related to 
the electricity generation plants)
and subproblems reduce to UC problems.

Solving the targeted investment problems with finer approximations is an 
important problematic for
obtaining more judicious investment decisions. Taking into account the 
discrete nature of certain decisions
(for instance switch-on costs of plants, ramping constraints, minimum 
on/off times, minimum power etc.)
and the stochastic and multi-stage nature of these problems represent 
technical barriers. In order to
overcome this challenge it is necessary to develop advanced algorithmic 
techniques based on reformulation
and decomposition algorithms. In order to be efficient, these techniques 
will also have to undergo a number
of improvements.

Work description: The first goal of this study will be to gather the 
state-of-the-art of the latest algorithmic
developments for solving two- and multi-stage stochastic problems with 
continuous and integer recourse.
For two-stage problems, we will be interested in recent advances in 
methods based on Benders decomposition
(Rahmaniani et al., 2017), especially stabilization, strategies aiming 
to balance the information
between the master and subproblems, batching of subproblems (Blanchot et 
al., 2023), and cut strengthening
(Chen and Luedtke, 2022). We will also study algorithms based on 
Lagrangian dual decomposition
such as progressive hedging or bundle methods for which the application 
of strategies like branch-andbound
allow to handle the integer recourse case (Atakan and Sen, 2018; Kim and 
Dandurand, 2022). For
multi-stage problems, we will be interested in stochastic dual dynamic 
integer programming (SDDiP) (Zou
et al., 2019) which has been applied to investment problems (Lara et 
al., 2020) sharing similarities with
the problem studied by EDF.

Using publicly available open-source implementations of the 
aforementioned techniques (for instance (Kim
and Zavala, 2018)) and implementations that will be developed by the 
postdoctoral researcher, a numerical
study will be conducted in order to quantify the loss of optimality due 
to approximations (multi/two-stage
and continuous/integer recourse) on smaller-scale problems having the 
same structure as the application
at hand. This part of the study will aim to identify the limitations of 
the existing approaches as well as
determine the most relevant approximation of the target problem.
We will then work on trying to solve the scientific roadblocks 
determined in the first phase for the most
relevant version of the problem. Improving existing methodologies based 
on the special structure of the
problem at hand, or developing heuristic version of existing approaches 
are possible avenues that might
be explored.

Profile: PhD in Operations research or Mathematical optimization.

Required skills:
- Mixed-integer linear programming
- Significant experience with programming languages (C++ preferred)

Skills/knowledge that would be appreciated:
- Decomposition methods in mixed-integer linear programming (Benders, 
Dantzig-Wolfe, Lagrangian)
- Stochastic programming, robust optimization
- Dynamic programming
- Modeling or solving industrial problems

Salary: ~2,250?/month (net)

Environment: The work will primarily be conducted in the Inria 
project-team Edge, in the building of the
Mathematics Institute of Bordeaux located at Talence.
There will also be a number of trips to EDF offices (Massy): one to two 
weeks at the start of the position
and approximately 2 days per month. There may also be one or two trips 
to Lille. Transport and
accommodation costs for these trips are covered.

The newly established Young Investigator Group (YIG) ?COSYS - Control 
Systems and Cyber Security Lab? at the Chair of IT Security at the 
Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg has several 
open PhD/Postdoc positions in the following areas: intrusion detection 
systems for critical infrastructures, secure cyber-physical systems, 
artificial intelligence / machine learning for traffic analysis, 
honeypots, and privacy enhancing techniques. The available positions are 
funded as 100% TV-L E13 tariff in Germany and limited until 31.07.2026, 
with possibility for extension.

Candidates must hold a Master?s degree (or equivalent) and PhD (only for

Dear colleagues,

We seek outstanding, highly motivated researchers for a postdoc in discrete
mathematics in Amsterdam, with a priority towards *extremal/probabilistic
combinatorics* and *structural graph theory*.

The *two-year* position would be embedded in the Discrete Mathematics and
Quantum Information (DMQI) group at the Korteweg-de Vries Institute for
Mathematics at the *University of Amsterdam*. It would also be embedded in
a Dutch multi-site consortium, *NETWORKS*, devoted to the algorithmic,
combinatorial, stochastic analysis of large-scale networks. The scope of
potential research is wide, but should relate well to the (broad) themes of
NETWORKS and be compatible with interests of the DMQI group.

The working conditions are good and subject to the collective agreement for
Dutch university employees (CAO NU). The Netherlands is a compact,
comfortable, well-connected country, enjoying a high standard of living.
Amsterdam is a fun, open, international, and vibrant city.

*Note on eligibility*: because of the funding, the EU COFUND programme,
there are some special criteria, in particular, being with 3 years of PhD
and not having resided in the Netherlands for too long in the previous 3
years.

The deadline for application is *20 October 2023*.

There is some flexibility in the starting date, but preferred is *1 January
2024*.
