About the job
The Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Science, University of
Helsinki, invites applications for the position of
*UNIVERSITY LECTURER IN COMPUTER SCIENCE
*for a permanent appointment starting in November 2025 or later as
agreed. The employment includes a six-month trial period.
The lecturer will be attached to the Liberal Arts and Sciences
Bachelor’s Programme currently under preparation at the University and
launching in Fall semester 2026. This programme, led by the Faculty of
Arts, joins together the faculties of Arts, Social Sciences, Science,
Agriculture and Forestry, and Biological and Environmental Sciences at
the University of Helsinki for its first broadly interdisciplinary
international bachelor’s.
The recruit will have the unique opportunity to take part in designing
and delivering a programme first of its kind in the University and in
Finland. The pedagogical idea behind the programme is that through being
exposed to, and needing to integrate diverse disciplinary outlooks,
students will learn (alongside disciplinary skills) broadly useful
meta-skills of interdisciplinary contextualisation, analysis,
problem-solving and critical thinking.
The recruit will be responsible for setting up computer science-related
courses and content included in the Liberal Arts and Sciences programme
and coordinating activities with other faculties involved in the
programme. The interdisciplinary nature of the programme will also
require a plenty of student mentoring and supervision, which the recruit
will also partake in.
In addition to the Liberal Arts and Science Bachelor’s programme, the
recruit is expected to contribute to other teaching programs at the
Department of Computer Science, for example BSc Programme in Computer
Science, BSc Programme in Science, MSc Programme in Computer Science, or
MSc Programme in Data Science, depending on the qualifications and
language skills of the recruit.
*Requirements For The Position And Assessment Of Qualifications
*According to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, appointees
to university lectureships must hold an applicable doctoral degree and
have the ability to provide high- quality research-based teaching and
supervise theses.
When assessing the qualifications of applicants, attention will be paid
to scholarly publications and other research results of scholarly value,
teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce
learning materials, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a teaching
demonstration.
Additional evaluation criteria for this position are:
* Experience in some area of computer science represented at the
department (algorithms, networks, software engineering, AI, data
science)
* Experience of working in highly interdisciplinary environments
* Experience in designing and enacting (interdisciplinary) teaching
(on any level, e.g. course/module/programme)
* Experience in coordinating and organising (interdisciplinary)
teaching and/or research
* Experience in mentoring and guiding students
Pursuant to the Government Decree on Universities (770/2009), appointees
to teaching and research positions at the University must be proficient
in the language in which they provide instruction, i.e., English for
this position. Good co-operation and interaction skills are considered
an advantage for the applicant.

The salary for the position will be based on levels 5–7 of the job
requirement scheme for teaching and research staff in the salary system
of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a
salary component based on personal performance. The appointee’s gross
annual salary will range from €48,000 to €70,000, depending on their
previous experience and qualifications.

The Department of Computer Science is a leading unit in Finland in its
area and responsible for the teaching and research in computer science
at the University of Helsinki. The main research fields at the
department are artificial intelligence, big data frameworks,
bioinformatics, data analysis, data science, discrete and machine
learning algorithms, distributed, intelligent, and interactive systems,
networks, security, and software and database systems. The department
has extensive international collaboration with companies and
universities. Within teaching, the department’s professors and staff are
in charge of the Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral Programmes in
Computer Science, as well as the separate Master’s Programme in Data
Science, and contribute to the interdisciplinary and international
Bachelor's Programme in Science, and the Liberal Arts and Sciences
