What is a Cohen-Macaulay ring?
Abstract:
This is an expository talk with no recent research presented. A ring is called a "Cohen-Macaulay ring" when its depth (a numerical invariant of algebraic flavor) and its dimension (a more geometric numerical invariant) happen to be equal. What does that even mean? In this talk we go through the fundamental ingredients needed for this definition to make sense and some examples. The concept of a Cohen-Macaulay ring is ubiquitous in commutative algebra, but we focus on links with combinatorics. Everybody is welcome.
