The Modeling, Simulation, and Optimization of Complex Systems Group of
Michael Hinze at the University Koblenz-Landau is inviting applications
for a research position in Shape Optimization with Phase Field Models.

The position is subject to the German law on fixed-term contracts in
science (WissZeitVG). The position can be filled immediately and is
limited to three years for doctoral students with salary according to
0,75 EGr 13 TV-L, and to two years for postdoctoral researchers
according to a full salary EGr. 13 TV-L. The successful candidate will
work in the Modeling, Simulation, and Optimization of Complex Systems
Group of the University Koblenz-Landau.

Topic:
This project is part of the Priority Programme 1962 of the German
Research Foundation and aims at introducing, analyzing and numerically
realizing well-posed formulations of shape optimization problems with
instationary fluid flow. This will be achieved by utilizing a phase
field ansatz and associated non-smooth homogeneous free energy
densities, which yield robust numerical approximations and, for the sake
of efficient computations, admit several levels of model reduction
ranging from adaptive meshing to proper orthogonal decomposition.
Moreover, a Darcy-type approach allows to simultaneously optimize the
topology of the fluid domain. This is a joint project with the research
group of Professor Hintermüller located in Berlin at the Weierstrass
Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics. Both groups enjoy a
history of successful collaboration on other projects relating to
optimization subject to fluid flow.

Requirements:
The successful candidate requires a master degree in Applied
Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering or Computational Physics, ideally
with a strong background in numerical methods for PDEs and nonlinear
programming, as well as experience in numerical fluid mechanics. Fluency
in both written and spoken English and the ability to work in an
interdisciplinary team are mandatory. Additional knowledge in modern
scientific programming is desired. Very strong problem-solving skills,
willingness to learn, ability to work independently,
experience/willingness in writing publications and good presentation
skills are essential.
Please contact Prof. Dr. Michael Hinze (phone: +49 (0)261/287-2310 or
e-mail: hinze at uni-koblenz.de) for further information.

It is the policy of the University Koblenz-Landau to increase the
percentage of female employees. If equally qualified, preference will be
given to female applicants in fields where they are underrepresented.
Disabled candidates are given priority, if equally qualified.
International candidates are highly encouraged to apply.

Applications should include a letter of motivation, complete curriculum
vitae with a list of publications and presentations, certificates etc.
Please send your application, quoting the reference number Ko 46/2019,
before April 1st, 2020 by e-mail in a single PDF file to
bewerbung-K21 at uni-koblenz.de. Applications are accepted until the
position is filled.
We do not send a confirmation of receipt. In accordance to the
protection of data privacy all documents will be destroyed after the
application procedure.
